Overview

Genozip is a compressor built for genomic file formats. Archives of FASTQ, BAM, VCF and other genetic data files usually take far less space than with gzip, and every file is restored exactly as it was. It suits sequencing labs, hospitals, biobanks and research groups that keep large archives for years.

Compression ratio

File formatComparison againstRelative size of file compressed by genozip
FASTQ/FASTAfastq.gz 20-50% (up to 5 times smaller)
SAM / BAM / CRAM.bam8-40% (up to 12 times smaller)
VCFvcf.gz10-35% (up to 10 times smaller)
GFF/GVF/GTF.gff315% (6.6 times smaller)

Additional features

Reference-based mode

Match reads against a reference genome for noticeably smaller files.

Co-compression of paired-end FASTQ files

Compress R1 and R2 jointly, typically 10 to 15 percent smaller.

Deep: BAM + FASTQ

Store a BAM with its source FASTQs in one file and restore every original.

Lossy compression

While Genozip is primarily a lossless compressor, there is available lossy compression as well
